Candle HistoryCandles have been used for more than 5000 years, yet it is very hard to pin point their origins. It is often though that the first candles were used by the Egyptians, who used rushlights or torches made by soaking reeds in melted animal fats, although this had no wick, like a true candle. Evidence has also been found that in early Chinese history a form of candle was moulded using paper tubes, and made from the waxes of plants and insects, and contained a rice paper as a wick. It is also known that candles played a large part in religious ceremonies, such as Hanukkah, the festival of light, which involves the lighting of candles, dates back to 165bc.
