All About Incense

Incense is a wonderful way to fragrance your home and we sell a wide variety of incense types, in fragrances you can use to create the perfect mood. With a rich history and a multitude of scents to choose from, incense is the perfect way to enjoy beautiful fragrance at home.

What is incense?

Incense is basically a dried mixture of aromatic materials that are burned slowly to release aromatic smoke. There are many different forms of incense, the most usual being incense cones and incense sticks.

How do I use Incense?

Place the incense in an appropriate holder (for incense sticks) or on a suitable surface if the incense is a cone. Make sure the surface is resistant to heat. When using wooden incense sticks place the bare wooden end in a hole in the holder and light the other end. When using incense cones light the pointed tip and place with the flat base down on a suitable surface.

What is the history of incense?

Incense was first brought to China by a monk in 200AD, but incense has been used by man since the time of the Ancient Egyptians, and possibly even before that. Throughout the world we can see historical evidence of incense being used ritualistically, from biblical references to Frankincense to the shamanic rituals practised by Native Americans. Traditionally incense was burnt using coals and placing the dried material onto the heat they produced. Stick incense was developed in China during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), and revolutionised the way we enjoy incense today.

In Japan the preparation of incense became a highly skilled art form or Koh-Do, 'the way of incense'. Traditional Japanese incense does not have a wooden splint around which the aromatic material is rolled, rather the aromatic material is compressed into a stick that is purely incense and creates no wood smoke when burnt. The Japanese created the popular incense cone - another example of incense being used without wooden support - and presented it at the 1880 World's Fair in Chicago.

Incense was historically used in religious ritual and for personal meditation. Today that tradition continues, with traditional eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism continuing to use incense when meditating and incense is still a part of the Roman Catholic Mass, maintaining the traditional rituals that have marked centuries of divine devotion.

What scents are used in incense?

There are a number of different scents used in incense, and they can be roughly divided into four categories: Plant-derived, animal-derived, essential oil fragrances and artificial fragrances.
