All About AromatherapyEssential Oils vs. Fragrance OilsThere is one key difference between essential and fragrance oils - namely essential oils are naturally derived and fragrance oils are artificial. Artificial oils do not offer the therapeutic benefits of essential oils, but can be used to fill a room with a stimulating and enticing aroma. Aromatherapy HistoryFor over 6000 years we have used the oils distilled from plants and other aromatic compounds to create an aroma that has a positive effect on a person's health. The ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians all used aromatic oils when bathing and massaging, noting that different scents has markedly different effects on the body and mind. Perfumer Rene-Maurice Gattefosse devoted his life to researching the medicinal properties of essential oils after an accident at his laboratory where he plunged his arm into a vat of lavender oil after it was set alight. He noted the immediate pain relief and accelerated healing time, coming to the conclusion that it was the essential oil that was responsible. The pioneering work of Gattefosse was continued by Jean Galet, who used essential oils during World War II to treat gangrene in wounded soldiers.
