April Hosking and Stephen Bellingham of Clevedon were married by candlelight and the bride wore a dramatic green medieval-style gown created by the dress designer from hit movie Lord of the Rings, reports the Somerset Mercury.

Music was provided by the Clevedon Light Opera Junior Choir and the newlyweds were greeted by a new black Labrador, a gift from the bride’s parents, as they left the church.

Speaking in the Chicago Tribune, wedding planner Kara Underwood said that couples should resist expensive ‘traditions’ and not be afraid to cut back on unnecessary spending.

Ms Underwood cited the example of expensive floral displays at each table, saying that she now sees many weddings with candles used instead.

She added that flowers and elaborate decorations were not necessary, as “most churches or venues are beautiful on their own”.

Other ways to cut costs include leaving out party favours, which “cheapen” the table, and avoiding personalised stationery.

However, Ms Underwood told the newspaper that effort and money should be spent on invitations, as this is the one interaction with the wedding for guests who cannot attend the ceremony.

According to Susan Martin of the Buffalo News, white candles are “clean and fresh”.

The writer stated she now only had white candles in her home, which are the way to make rooms look simple yet elegant.
