Lighting a bayberry scented candle is an American tradition to bring good fortune in the new year, according to one news provider.
Examiner.com has said that the tradition began during colonial times, when the expense of the wax meant they were usually only reserved for special occasions.
Bayberry candles were known to produce a brighter light and last longer than regular beeswax candles.
The habit, stemming from the original thirteen colonies, then spread to other parts of America.
According to the website, many people purchase bayberry candles around the time of Christmas and new year.
The tradition goes that if the candle burns all night, it will bring wealth and fortune to the household that lit it.
People wishing to try out the tradition for themselves can purchase Holiday Bayberry housewarmer candles from Yankee Candle.
The fragrance features pine, fir and laurel, which are softened by the scents of bayberry, frankincense and myrrh.

The experience was heightened by the sound of “ultra-calming” woodwind music and the massage featured aromatic oils.

Scented candles can provide a relaxing and cheap alternative to a far-flung trip during the current global economic crisis, it has been claimed.
According to Connie Umbenhower, founder of Himalayan Boot Camp, said lighting up luxury candles in the home and walking in a local forest or woodland can help recreate the experience of hiking in the Himalayas.
She said one of the best ways for people to take their minds off their bank balances and relationships was to “de-stress by lighting some candles in your bathroom, turning off the lights and taking a hot aromatic bath using either green tea- or eucalyptus-scented bath oil while listening to your favourite soothing music”.
Ms Umbenhower said money spent on a ‘trip’ like this will save a person much more in the long-term and provide them with emotional security.
